On Monday, Lowell is releasing a new EP called ‘I Killed Sarah V.’ She is newly-signed with Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and is recently receiving some very positive media attention.
In the midst of her busy promotion schedule, Lowell was kind enough to answer some questions for us. Read on!
a-ha.com: From the time when your involvement with Apparatjik was first revealed – in the duet ‘That’s the thing about us’ in early 2012 – and in subsequent press and performances, it has been clear that you have a very special relationship with the guys. What is it *really* like working with Apparatjik?
IF YOU’VE EVER SEEN “WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE”, BASICALLY I AM THE LITTLE BOY AND APPARATJIK ARE THE MONSTERS WHO ARE MY FRIENDS AND WE LOVE EACH OTHER…BUT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE THEY TRY TO EAT ME, BUT THEN WE BUILD A FORT AND TELL STORIES IN IT.
a-ha.com: You’ve performed with Apparatjik at Roskilde and Statens Museum for Kunst in Denmark, as well as the opening of the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo, and a couple of below-the-radar showcase gigs. Will you continue to perform with the guys in the future? Or will your own touring and songwriting leave less time for that?
I WILL ALWAYS BE INVOLVED WITH APPARATJIK IN SOME WAY AND WILL TRY TO DO MORE SHOWS WITH THEM NO MATTER HOW BUSY I GET. THEY ARE LIKE MY FAMILY.
a-ha.com: How much input have you had in audio, visual and performance aspects of the Apparatjik shows?
WE ALWAYS BRAINSTORM TOGETHER BUT SEEING AS HOW I JOINED APPARATJIK, I WASN’T GOING TO COME IN AND TAKE OVER AS THEY ALREADY HAD A GREAT THING GOING. THAT BEING SAID, THE APPARATJIK & LOWELL EP WAS CO-WRITTEN BY ME AND THE GUYS (AND CO-PRODUCED IN SOME INSTANCES). ALTHOUGH A LOT OF THE WRITING WAS INITIALLY ME AND A LOT OF THE SONGS WERE “FINISHED” WHICH GOT APPARATJIK EXCITED TO WORK TOGETHER IN THE FIRST PLACE, THE “OFFICIAL” MAKING OF THE EP INVOLVED ALL OF US SITTING IN THE ROOM TOGETHER, WRITING AND JIVING OFF OF ALL OF OUR CRAZY IDEAS AND INSPIRING EACH OTHER THROUGH “APPARATJIK MADNESS” …IT WAS LIKE BIRTHING A NEW BABY. AS WELL DURING MY SECTION OF THE APPARATJIK PERFORMANCES, I HAVE MY VIDEOS PLAYING (WHICH I MADE). I SHOULD MENTION JONAS IS A VIDEO MASTERMIND AND HE INSPIRED ME TO START MAKING MY OWN VIDEOS MYSELF.
a-ha.com: While working, performing and traveling with Apparatjik, you must have met a lot of a-ha fans. What has that experience been like?
I HAVE… AND THEY ARE ALL LOVELY. I EVEN KNOW SOME PERSONALLY NOW. THE FUNNY THING ABOUT A-HA FANS IS THEY EITHER LOVE YOU AND SUPPORT YOU OR THEY REALLY WANT YOU TO GO AWAY!
a-ha.com: Last summer you held a workshop at Stolper + Friends gallery in Oslo. How did that come about?
MAGNE IS VERY INVOLVED IN THE “ART WORLD” AND HAS EMBRACED AND BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF MY ART FROM THE BEGINNING. WE STARTED BRAINSTORMING THE IDEA DURING REHEARSALS IN DENMARK PRIOR TO THE MUSEUM SHOW AND IT SLOWLY BUILT FROM THERE.
a-ha.com: There seemed to be an equal amount of visual and audio creative output from the workshop; how does your work in the visual arts relate to your work with music?
IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY BOUGHT C=BLUE ON ITUNES, YOU WILL NOTICE MAGNE IS READING AN ARTICLE ABOUT SYNESTHESIA. THIS SONG CAME OUT OF A CONVERSATION WE WERE HAVING ABOUT HOW I HAVE THIS “CONDITION” WHICH (IF YOU DONT KNOW) MEANS YOU SEE NOTES IN MUSIC BY WAY OF DIFFERENT COLOURS, I.E. C=BLUE OR A=RED…OR EVEN THE SONG “KIDS” = YELLOW OR YELLOW-Y ORANGE SHADES. THIS IS SORT OF AN EXAMPLE OF HOW MUSIC AND VISUALS ARE JOINED FOR ME. WHEN I AM WRITING SONGS, I AM IMMEDIATELY IMAGINING VIDEOS AND VISUALS IN MY HEAD. ITS AS IMPORTANT A TOOL IN MY MUSIC MAKING AS HAVING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
a-ha.com: As we’ve seen from the music videos you’ve produced, there is a major artistic element to them; is your art usually produced in conjunction with your music, or do you work on art independently of music projects as well?
SEE MY ANSWER ABOVE — I THINK THE ANSWER IS IN THERE 🙂 MUSIC AND VIDEO SIMULTANEOUSLY.
a-ha.com: Magne has described you as a ‘creative powerhouse’, and said that you’re currently working with a number of artists. Are there any forthcoming projects you can tell us about?
I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS ON THE GO AT THE MOMENT BUT MY MAIN FOCUS IS MY SOLO RECORD AND EP COMNIG OUT THIS YEAR AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF VIDEOS AND VISUALS THAT WILL COME OUT ALONG SIDE OF IT.
a-ha.com: You’ve written one song of Tini’s, ‘The Ladies Gentlemen’s Club’. How did that come about, and have you written other songs for her forthcoming album?
I WROTE “LGC” AGES AGO. IT WAS PART OF A COLLECTION OF UKULELE SONGS I WROTE WHILST I WAS TRAVELING YEARS AGO. UKULELES ARE VERY PORTABLE. I HAVE MORE SONGS, SO WHO KNOWS, MAYBE SHE’LL USE THEM?
a-ha.com: According to rumor, you are also working with Martin Halla on songs for his second album. What has that collaboration been like?
MARTIN HALLA IS MY FAVOURITE PERSON EVER. HE’S SWEET, EASY-GOING AND HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL.
a-ha.com: How much of your time is spent writing and recording in Kensaltown on various projects, compared with the promotion and concerts you’ve done over in Canada and America in recent months?
I HAVE A WRITING ROOM/STUDIO AT KENSALTOWN NEXT TO MARTIN TEREFE THAT I’VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME CREATING IN. SO THE DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS OF OUR CREATIVE STREAMS TRANSFER SMOOTHLY BETWEEN THE DOORS OF OUR CREATIVE SPACES. MY GOAL WOULD BE TO SPLIT MY TIME 50/50 BETWEEN THE UK AND NORTH AMERICA BUT RIGHT NOW I AM IN CANADA BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE MY LABEL IS AND I AM VERY FOCUSED ON THE NEW RELEASE AND WILL ALSO BE TRAVELING TO THE US QUITE A BIT FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES AND SHOWS. BUT ONCE TOURING IS DONE I WILL BE BACK OVER TO K-TOWN RIGHT AWAY TO CONTINUE WORKING ON ALBUM #2.
a-ha.com: Are you pleased by the response to your new song ‘Cloud 69’? Were there any reviews that surprised you?
I’M REALLY HAPPY SO FAR AND EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF GREAT PRESS AND RESPONSE TO THE SONG WHICH IS REALLY SPECIAL TO SEE. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’VE SPENT ABOUT 3 YEARS WORKING ON YOUR ALBUM. ITS LIKE HAVING A BABY AND HEARING ITS CUTE — YOU CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT!! HA!! I APPRECIATED THE POST BY A-HA’S FACEBOOK PAGE AND THE COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS FUN TO READ. A-HA IS SUCH A UNIQUE BAND TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH IN THAT ITS SO CLASSIC IT HAS SOME OF THE MOST DIE-HARD AND DEVOTED FANS ANY BAND HAS EVER SEEN WHICH IS AMAZING. THAT BEING SAID, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, SOME OF THEM LOVE YOU AND SOME OF THEM JUST WANT YOU TO GO AWAY. THE ONES THAT WANT YOU TO GO AWAY MEAN WELL BUT THEY JUST LOVE A-HA SO MUCH IT SEEMS THAT THEY WISH THAT A-HA WERE THE ONLY BAND THAT EXISTED WHICH IS INCREDIBLE AND I RESPECT THAT……..BUT IM NOT GOING AWAY 😉 ALSO…I WAS ACTUALLY GOING FOR “A FART SOUND” IN THE INTRO TO “CLOUD 69”! SO BINGO BANGO!!
a-ha.com: So far ‘Cloud 69’ has been played over 13,000 times on Soundcloud, which is great! How does this compare with the public response to tracks from ‘If you can, solve this jumble?’, which you and Apparatjik released in fall of 2012?
LETS JUST SAY “….JUMBLE” IS POISED TO BE THE SECRET, FORGOTTEN GEM THAT PEOPLE WILL FIND LATER. ITS TOO SPECIAL TO BE POPULAR RIGHT NOW. ANYWAYS, POPULAR WAS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WE WERE GOING FOR WITH THAT PROJECT.
a-ha.com: On February 24, we’ll get to hear your new EP, ‘I Killed Sarah V.’ What can we expect from the EP as a whole? Is there a central theme for these songs?
YES ITS THE 24TH OF FEB IN THE UK AND THE 25TH EVERYWHERE ELSE. “88” IS OUT NOW (STREAMING) WHICH CAN MAYBE GIVE YOU A BETTER IDEA, BUT EVERY SONG IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO THE NEXT SO I GUESS YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT…ITS VERY POPPY AND QUITE UPBEAT. AS FOR A THEME, I’D LOVE TO LET THE LISTENER MAKE UP THEIR MIND REGARDING THAT, BUT TO ME MY ENTIRE RECORD (THE FORTHCOMING LP) IS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SO REALLY THE LP IS A STORY OF MY ADVENTURES (AND MISADVENTURES) OF TRYING TO SURVIVE AS A YOUNG GIRL IN A “MAN’S WORLD”. IT TOUCHES ON ISSUES RANGING FROM POWER STRUGGLES BETWEEN THE SEXES AND RACES TO RAPE TO PROSTITUTION TO FEELINGS OF FREEDOM, EXPERIMENTATION AND GROWTH…TOPPED OFF WITH EMPOWERMENT.
a-ha.com: You have a couple of gigs on your calendar in the coming weeks; beyond that, what are your touring plans? Do you have plans to tour in Europe again?
THE FOCUS RIGHT NOW IS PRIMARILY THE U.S. BUT WHEN EUROPE CALLS I WILL COME BACK. BECAUSE EUROPE RULES!!
