Report:
Oslo had a-ha fever on August 21, and as the hour of the concert grew closer there were more and more signs of excitement around town. Norsk Hydro had an a-ha themed van that showed up at Aker Brygge and later near the stadium, and were handing out free t-shirts and beverages for the occasion; fans of all ages wearing now-classic black a-ha t-shirts poured out of buses, trams and trains headed towards Ullevaal Stadium; and media was on hand to capture it all. The queue for the Golden Circle started around 9:00am. The mood was of celebration and excitement: the stage was reported to be on a scale rarely seen in Norway, and this would be the first chance to see a-ha’s stadium set on this leg of the tour.
In a notable departure from previous setlists, the guys started the concert with a very energetic ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’, followed by ‘Move to Memphis’. The massive screens behind the band alternated images of the guys performing and other striking visual elements. Rows of lights raked the audience from above, pulsing in time with the music and drawing everyone in. “Do you like what we’ve done with the place?” Magne asked the crowd.
The audience of nearly 30,000 people seemed completely in tune with the band, clapping and singing, showing their appreciation for the music that made a-ha a household word and put Norway on the map for millions around the world. Fans of all ages came out to see a-ha one last time before the end; the three Oslo concerts in December had sold out so quickly, and mostly to foreign fans, but *this* was Oslo’s concert! The home crowd definitely gave a-ha an amazing sendoff, and the band played their hearts out for them.
A high point of the set was an acoustic and very touching rendition of the band’s final single, ‘Butterfly, Butterfly (The Last Hurrah)’.
The concert ended with confetti and fireworks, a fitting end to this celebration of a-ha’s career in their hometown.

I have built my trip from Poland to Oslo around that concert- something that raised a few eyebrows among my friends, but who cares? I have lots of wonderful memories: the anticipation when the lights were going down, the suspense how They will kick it off, the joy of hearing one after another songs from my personal “wish list”, the suprise at hearing the unexpected ones, the look of love for the band on the faces of all around me,the beautiful accoustic version of “Butterfly… with Morten forgetting the line but the fans helping him out immediately, his lovely, diffident smile at it, Magne’s usual chat with the crowd…. Memories made all the more poignant by the fact that I will see them only once more at RAH and then will have to say goodbye to the band that has been there for 25 years of my life.
The concert at Ullevaal was very good. Great atmosphere, great audience and a fantastic a-ha that performed really well. It was a night to remember.
